U.S. Secondary School Student Program (J-1 Visa)

The student must be between 15 and 18.5 years old at the start of the program.

Must not have completed more than 11 years of schooling (excluding kindergarten).

Must not have previously participated in a high school exchange program in the US on a J-1 or F-1 visa.

Commitment to living with the host family or in the boarding school for the entire program duration.

Commitment to full-time enrollment at the American high school.

What is the J-1 Visa for Secondary Students?

It grants the student the right to study full-time at an accredited American high school.

The program duration is usually one academic year maximum (it cannot be extended).

Students are not permitted to work in the United States, except for very minor jobs like babysitting, with the host family's approval.

J-2 Visa for Dependents

Can be granted to a spouse or unmarried children under 21 if the high school student is accompanied by a guardian participating in another exchange program.

In the case of the Secondary School Student Program, the student usually travels alone and stays with a host family, so the J-2 visa is not commonly used here.
